blueberry dog cookies w/ yogurt icing

since the 4th of july is approaching, yuki asked me to make something yummy for the holiday. after researching several dog recipes, i came to the realization that they're all basically different variations of the same thing. when making a healthy treat you of course do not want to use foods that are on the toxic foods list and you want to use the most wholesome ingredients you can. so i decided that i'd just try putting a few things together, that i knew yuki would like, and see how my little official canine taste-tester liked it.
i admit i tasted the cookie. i'll even admit when i was around 12 i tasted our dogs' food, dry of course, not the one in the can. i even tried a dog biscuit, not homemade, it came from a box, that came off a shelf-from a store. but anyway, i bring that embarrassing info up because that's sort of what these biscuits tasted like, only with more flavor. to my human taste buds, they tasted like a chewy, bland bread, with a hint of blueberry. i know these weren't meant for me though, they're meant for yuki and they're not supposed to taste good to me, just to yuki. after she did taste the cookies, she wanted more and that's always a good sign.

preheat oven to 350F
cookie ingredients:
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tbsp flaxseed
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup applesauce ( unsweetened or naturally sweetened)
1/2 cup frozen blueberries, defrosted (preferably organic)
1 tbsp honey
non- fat milk
directions:
in a medium bowl, mix the flour, flaxseed and oats. then add the applesauce, blueberries (setting aside the blueberry liquid that forms after the defrosting), and honey. add milk 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough just begins to hold together.
knead the dough on a floured surface. roll out the dough to desired thickness and with whatever cookie cutter shape you have chosen, cut out the cookie. place cookie cut-outs on a silpat or lightly greased baking sheet. put in oven for about 30 minutes. you need to flip the cookies over halfway through the baking time and also rotate the pan. let cookies cool completely before icing.

to make yogurt icing:
-one 4 oz., individual serving of non-fat yogurt (i used an organic vanilla yogurt, sweetened with organic sugar)
-reserved blueberry liquid
if you don't use a sweetened yogurt, you might want to consider adding a little honey to the yogurt.
with a small whisk, mix the yogurt until there are little to no clumps. slowly add the blueberry liquid, teaspoon at time. careful not to add to much, you don't want it to become runny.

pour yogurt into some sort of icing decorator. i spooned the yogurt into a plastic squeeze bottle. store cookies in the refrigerator, icing will set better if left in for a few hours.
note: i suggest feeding your pup the cookies the same day they are made or you can store the cookies and yogurt icing separately, if you want to feed them to your pups the next day. if you leave the cookies with yogurt overnight, the yogurt will dry up.

i gave yuki the option of cookie with yogurt and without yogurt. she went to the one with yogurt and licked half of it off. but then she went for the yogurtless one and ate that one. i thought at first she didn't like the yogurt, but after she was done with the first cookie, she went to finish licking off the rest of the yogurt and then proceeded to eat the second cookie. i'm a meany though and took the second one away. i try to limit her snacks, especially since she had chicken jerky earlier.
